My parents had seen that Glen Durrant, the former professional darts player, PDC Premier League champion and 3 time BDO world champion and now coach and Sky Sports darts commentator holds one to one coaching sessions, and being local to us decided to try a lesson to see how it could help me.
How It Went
Glen was very friendly, put me at ease straight away and explained what we would work on through out this session.
He looked at how I threw the dart and how I stand at the oche, apparently I have a quirky throw but he liked it 🙂
He explained how to set up before throwing a dart, and how to mentally prepare, don’t rush and especially don’t rush to grab your next dart before you’ve finished throwing.
Strange how when under pressure throwing with a player as good as Duzza that I was finding I was throwing a lot of good darts, strange how this was happening as under pressure in games its not the same.
Glen explained that darts is a lot about the mental side of the game, keeping consistency is key and how to carry on if a dart goes wrong, he really helped me think about keeping my focus.
We went through some training drills to do, explaining how he would practise for up to 6 hours a night, throwing 1000 darts at the bull, showing me the amount of hard work he put in really made me think if I want to progress in the game how much dedication is needed.
We went through different darts and weights, due to the amount of bounce outs I seem to get, he suggested a heavier dart, maybe a 24g as you want to hear the thud of the dart going in and as my throw isn’t powerful a heavier dart will enter the board with more force eliminating as many bounce outs, something I’m going to look at as the heavier darts did feel like they went in the board better.
Glen also filmed my throw and I’m just waiting for the results of this as he collaborates with straight to the point darts who will be helping to analyse my throw, so really looking forward to receiving the video on this soon, Will post the results soon.
So after an hour with Duzza at his house I found he was very helpful, pointing out a lot of things I can work on and great to hear it all from a professional, hopefully I can get some more lessons with him and show how he’s helped me improve.
Thanks Glen, really appriciate your help 🙂
Tom
